KUCHING (June 24): Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has given the green light for Fort Lily in Betong and Fort Sylvia in Kapit to serve as cultural heritage centres displaying antique Iban artefacts. The Premier said this would enable visitors, particularly tourists from outside Sarawak, to learn more about the rich history and culture of the largest ethnic group in Sarawak in addition to safeguarding and preserving the local cultural heritage. “I agree with (Deputy Premier) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah’s proposal for these two forts to serve as cultural heritage centres. “For me, I don’t see any problem with that, and you can just go ahead and start collecting the artefacts,” he said when opening the Iban Cultural Heritage Symposium and Expo 2024 at the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) headquarters here today. He was responding to the request made by Uggah earlier where the latter had said that DCF was mulling the idea of establishing a cultural heritage centre at Fort Lily and Fort Sylvia where Iban artefacts would be displayed. Abang Johari said he agreed with the proposal as the forts have been quite vacant with nothing much for show when visitors come around. “I have been to the fort in Sri Aman and there was ‘perahu’ on display at the time because VIPs were there. “What we need is exhibits that are a permanent fixture meant for visitors to know more about the history and background while also preserving the artefacts,” he said. He also suggested that DCF use Borneo Cultures Museum as their model as it has many exhibits that are interactive. “What is important is that it must be interactive. Use technology to interact and tell the narrative of the displays.” Earlier, Uggah, who is also DCF chairman, said the Foundation is ready to assist the Sarawak Museum Department with managing Fort Lily and Fort Sylvia. “We understand that the Museum Department is in the midst of upgrading various old forts including Fort Lily in Betong and Fort Sylvia in Kapit. We are very appreciative of this but at the moment, (Fort Lily in) Betong has a lot of vacant space. “In this regard, DCF is ready to send a management buyout proposal where we are planning to see where we can help the museum to manage Fort Lily and Fort Sylvia and our responsibility would be to collect all Iban artefacts and then later of other ethnic groups. “This is so that we will have a place which serves not only as a tourist attraction but also for researchers who will be able to go and visit these places of heritage,” he said. He said it was timely that such cultural heritage centres be established especially after Sarawak’s 60 years of independence. “We ask for Betong because most Iban are in Betong as well as in Kapit, and there are a lot of antique Iban heritage to be displayed. “These will be the pride of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole and that will attract tourists as well as show part of our contribution to beautify Sarawak’s multi-ethnic groups,” he said. Uggah told reporters later that DCF will be following up soon with Abang Johari on the agreement of this initiative. “We want to record our appreciation on behalf of the Iban community and DCF to the Premier who has swiftly agreed to our proposal to manage the two forts,” he said. Also present were Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister in the Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, Sarawak Science Research advisor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu and event organising chairman Prof Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat.

In making the call, Pemanca Alexander Isut said that among the social issues needing immediate attention are teenage pregnancy, drug problems and job scams. “I hope that DAM will continue with its effort to reach out the community and help to create awareness on issues which has affected our community. “The Iban community has the highest statistic of teenage pregnancy in Miri. Our people are also victims of job scams. Not only that, here, members from our community also involve in ‘Mat Rempit’ activities,” he said when officiating DAM’s Appreciation, Installation cum ‘Ngiling Tikai’ dinner at a leading hotel here last night. Alexander, who represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the function, highlighted the crucial role of exco and committee members in ensuring the association remains relevant and eminent in society. He acknowledged the dedication and sacrifice required to hold positions within an association. “To the previous exco members, due credit must be given to you all for the works that you all have been doing for the past two years. “For the newly-elected exco committee, I would say it is a very good training ground, especially for the young people. “There are many venues for you to serve and learn, be it in Youth Section, Women Section, Education, Business, Culture, Networking and many more,” he said, adding that the biggest challenge for the new exco would be to bring to reality the proposed Dayak Cultural Centre. The newly-elected DAM president for term 2024-2025 is Penghulu Wilfred Mac, while deputy president is Mathew Benson Mounsey. Abin Galieh is elected as the vice president, while Benedict Saran Ingkon is secretary general. SIBU (June 23): Sarawak wants to play an important role in technological advancement, especially in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang said the government understands the importance of AI and its capabilities in accelerating the state’s advancements in technology and economy. “No country can live without AI now and that includes Sarawak. AI requires two things to be implemented – technology and energy. “The state does not have that kind of technology yet as we are still learning – we are equipping ourselves with that kind of knowledge. “AI is a power hungry technology, and Sarawak has energy. Better yet, we have green energy,” said Tiang during his opening speech at the Borneo Robomaster Conference 2024 at RH Hotel here yesterday. The two day conference, organised by Sarawak Digital Media E-Platform Association (SDMEA) jointly with University of Technology Sarawak, saw 450 attendees engaging in robotic battles, academic sharing sessions, and drone competitions. Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, said the education syllabus must be made relevant to the era of AI with the government participating to leverage the technology. He hoped the government encourages students to enrol in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects to produce a more skilled workforce, assisting the state to become a green and digital economy. Speaking on Sarawak’s energy, he said the state is currently producing 5,745 megawatts (MW) of green energy with a target to meet 10,000 MW by 2030. He added 62 per cent of the generated energy derives from hydro-power, 21 per cent from gas, 16 per cent (coal), and one per cent (diesel). “In order to achieve 10,000 megawatts by 2030, the Sarawak government is now exploring the latest technology in power generation such as floating solar farms, cascading power sources, elevated water tanks, and tidal waves as a power source,” he said. Also present was SDMEA president Zoey Ting Giek.

KUCHING (June 22): The Melanau community must protect and preserve their mother tongue from extinction due to increasing trend of interracial marriage, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. The Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing said there has been a growing concern that the youngest generation from Melanau mixed marriages cannot speak or understand the Melanau language. Fatimah, also the Dalat assemblywoman, thus proposed that local organisations such as Persatuan eDOK (Dalat, Oya and Kut) hold informal language learning classes to engage the younger generation to pick up the native language. While admitting that it is not easy to pick up the various Melanau dialects, she, however, believed that such classes would be beneficial in the long run. “This is so that our children, who are the results of intermarriages, at least know the basic of the Melanau language and are able to converse in it,” she said at the eDOK Kuching/Samarahan ‘Santuni Kasih Aidiladha’ programme at Jalan Muhibbah here today. In support of that initiative, she said the Melanau Dalat Association had in previous years collaborated with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) to publish a Malay- Melanau Dalat glossary for future reference. Citing some accomplishments and similar efforts by the Bidayuh community in Serian and the Kelabit in Bario, she suggested for the eDOK Kuching Association to seek sponsorship from the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) to produce simple reading materials in the Melanau language. “All their content materials were produced locally to maintain their authenticity,” she said, adding that such efforts enhanced the interests of the preschool children where they were enlightened on the culture and traditions of the various ethnic groups in Sarawak. Fatimah later presented a minor rural project (MRP) grant of RM3,000 to the eDOK Kuching Association, witnessed by some 300 members in attendance.

TEBEDU (June 17): The community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in the predominantly-Bidayuh Kedup constituency must go all-out in preserving the customs of the community such as their traditional dances, clothes and food. In making this call, Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak Datuk Martin Ben highlighted the importance of this move in that he would not want to see the customs of his community being forgotten by the younger generation. “The KMKKs should take the matter seriously so that the new generation will continue to learn and appreciate the customs, and for it to not be forgotten in the future. “With the existence of sophisticated modern technology nowadays becoming so popular among the new generation, old customs face the threat to being lost and forgotten,” he said in a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) yesterday. KUCHING (June 16): Sarawak’s achievement in collecting RM13.1 billion revenue last year was due to the hard work and diligence of the state government, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said the revenue, which was the highest performance ever achieved by the state, was not something that was attained easily. “No other state in the country has ever achieved RM13 billion in revenue collection. Even if you combined all the states, they still cannot surpass Sarawak. “This is because we work hard. ‘Rezeki’ (blessings or sustenance) does not fall on our laps. ‘Rezeki’ only comes when we work hard,” he said at the Gedong district Gawai Dayak Ngiling Bidai ceremony held at RTC Munggu Lalang Hall in Gedong today. Also present were Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris and former Gedong assemblyman Dato Sri Naroden Majais. Abang Johari, who is Gedong assemblyman, said he remains unbothered by his critics for everything that he has done for Sarawak has been with utmost sincerity. He said he is aware of the criticisms some may have against him especially when Sarawak is now often in the limelight for its remarkable progress over the years. “As we progress, there are bound to be people who are envious of our achievements. It is human nature. “It’s okay if they want to criticise me. As long as I am sincere in everything that I do, I will receive blessings from God,” he said. He also said that his good intentions and sincerity in developing Sarawak has allowed him to be blessed with good health in return. “As a Muslim, I believe that God will help me. At least I’m healthy. I’m 74 years old but I can still stand and walk without the need for a cane. I thank God for what He has given me. I am not rich, but God gave me health and that is what is important,” he said. Recently, several police reports were lodged against a writer whose online articles were alleged to have slandered and disparaged Abang Johari. One of the reports was lodged by Political Secretary to the Premier Dato Nyomek Nyeap last Thursday (June 13), who said the articles demeaned Abang Johari and were made to tarnish the Premier’s credibility. He also said that the writer’s actions were designed to stir dissatisfaction among the people which could undermine the existing harmony in Sarawak.

In a statement today, he said the scorching heat in the earlier part of the procession yesterday to the pouring rain later that day did not deter nor dampen the spirit of the over 3,000 participants, representing 111 contingents, from completing the 1.2 kilometres route. “This speaks volume of your resilience, your sense of purpose, and unity. These qualities augur well for us in accomplishing the objectives of our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 for Sarawak to become a high-income region. “Your participation too is an unwavering stand in the commitments and efforts to preserve our respective cultural heritage. It is our earnest hope and expectation that in next year’s parade, we will again experience similar enthusiasm, commitment and joy,” he said. The statement was issued to congratulate and thank all the participants, officials, and members of public for their co-operation and support. On a related matter, he said the Dayak community is also very much proud that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg joined them during this procession. “The Dayak community is very much honoured by his presence. This again exemplifies that he is the Premier of all races in Sarawak. “We are very proud as well that other members of the cabinet, community leaders and other dignitaries had joined in our Gawai Dayak joys,” he added. Meanwhile, Uggah who is the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, wishes all Muslims a very happy and blessed Hari Raya Haji tomorrow.

KUCHING (June 15): The Kelab Anak Bukit Saban members involved in the Gawai Cultural Parade today were excited to be part of the parade taking place here today. They said they have been anticipating the celebration since last year and are now thrilled the day has finally arrived. “I can’t wait to be a part of this parade because me and my fellow villagers have been talking about this event since last year. “When we participated in this parade last year, we realised how big of an event it was; hence, we wanted to join again this year,” said a member of the contingent Palima Ngadan, who is also a village chief from Sungai Rian, Anyut, Ulu Paku. Another participant Leonora Lamban commented that she and her friends prepared for weeks before the celebration to find the right attire to wear. The lass hailing from Senunok, Ulu Paku, Spaoh said last year’s event was spectacular for her, as it showcased the unique cultures of the Dayak natives of Borneo. “I always loved to participate in events that highlight Dayak-related culture and there is nothing more beautiful to me than celebrating the Gawai Dayak festival. “Gawai Dayak is a celebration of Dayak culture, and this parade is the type of event I enjoy the most as it highlights Dayak identity — it gives me a chance to show my roots because I am a Dayak,” she enthused. As for contingent head Chambai Mancha, the parade — also known as ‘Niti Daun’ by the Iban community — is indeed a celebration of Dayak culture and Dayaks should be honoured to participate in it. He opined it celebrates togetherness among the people of Sarawak regardless of whether they come from the Dayak community or not. “We are honoured to participate in the parade, because we want to show support for this event that promotes our culture. “Those who are not from the Dayak community are also most welcomed to join this parade or the Gawai Dayak celebration as a whole because this is a celebration for everyone,” he said. The Bukit Saban contingent is special as they represent the constituency of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, which is also where he comes from. Uggah is also advisor for the state-level Gawai Dayak Festival organising committee. A total of 99 contingents, including 13 floats or decorated vehicles, will participate in the parade today; showcasing the rich diversity of various ethnic groups and traditional attire in Sarawak. A delegation from the Kadazan Dusun ethnic group in Sabah has also been invited to liven up the festivities.

KUCHING (June 15): This year’s Gawai Dayak ‘Niti Daun’ parade reflects the solid support of Sarawakians for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said this after witnessing thousands of participants joining the parade and marching in the middle of a hot afternoon followed by sudden heavy downpour today. “Today we witnessed the ‘Niti Daun’, one of the Gawai Dayak celebration programmes in the state, and today we witnessed 111 teams. “And what is wonderful is that these teams are representing all races and all religions in Sarawak. Another beautiful scene is where people of all races in Sarawak celebrate Hari Gawai – part of our way of continuing to take care of our unity in Sarawak. “Despite the heat and rain, we are all in high spirits. This embodies the resilience and unity of Sarawakians as we progress towards 2030, strengthening our racial and religious harmony, and supporting the GPS government’s efforts to develop Sarawak,” he said when met after the Natai Daun parade at the Kuching Waterfront. He said it was remarkable to see the event, encompassing diverse races and religions from across Sarawak participating in this celebration of cultural unity. So this is indeed a very blessed event and we would like to thank Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for witnessing the event. “Despite inclement weather towards the event’s conclusion, participants remained undeterred, displaying unwavering enthusiasm throughout. “And I also would like to thank (Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development) Dato Sri Roland Sagah for organising a very successful event this afternoon,” he added. The findings of the investigations will be handed over to the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further action,” he said. He said this during the ‘Integrity Message’ ceremony for Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) staff and management, as well as community leaders, here yesterday. “The important thing is to have facts and evidence that justify an investigation to maintain the well-being of the people as well as to prevent abuse of power and injustice – all of which aim to strengthen the integrity of Sarawakians,” he added. Juanda also said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants to see all Sarawakians – from the top levels to the grassroots – practise integrity. “We hope this message of integrity is understood from the top down. Any misconduct must be reported. If not, people will assume corruption and abuse of power are normal.” He also said the public is encouraged to become whistleblowers and monitor problems in their respective areas. “We need to explain this process to the community, and sometimes it is appropriate to hold dialogues to facilitate the public in making complaints, which can then be addressed by the authorities,” he said. Among those present at the event were Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee, BDA deputy chairman Dato Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, BDA general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari and BDA deputy general manager Abdul Rahim Abdullah.

KUCHING (June 13): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged Sarawakians to seize the job opportunities available in the green energy sector as Sarawak aims to be the first region in Malaysia to pioneer green energy initiatives. According to him, green energy represents the future of Sarawak, hence, Sarawakians must recognise the bright prospects it holds while the Sarawak government is keen to develop this sector extensively. “If possible, I don’t want to see these jobs being taken by people from outside Sarawak. These jobs are created by Sarawakians, for Sarawakians,” he said during the launching of FAME International Skills Academy and Fame-Meta.com platform at Crown Square today. Dr Sim also stressed that the green energy sector is crucial for the future of Sarawak’s economy, and thus, the region must focus on developing it to create more job opportunities for its residents. He also noted that the green energy sector is poised to become Sarawak’s main income source in the future, and Sarawakians should realise this potential. He said Sarawak has abundant natural resources, such as hydrogen and biomass, which can be harnessed to develop the sector into a primary income source for the state. “Together, we can prosper in Sarawak by developing the green energy sector because we have all the necessary natural resources. “Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is also keen to see Sarawak become a green energy powerhouse,” he added. He thus urged Sarawakians to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to be involved in the sector from now on. On a related matter, it was reported last month Abang Johari had announced that an estimated US$460 billion (RM2.158 trillion) is expected to be invested in the proposed Sarawak New Energy Hub project in Bintulu. “The amount includes both government spending and private sector investments,” he said after a briefing at Samsung E&A Corporation in Seoul at the time. The announcement concluded his two-day working visit to South Korea, during which he met with officials from the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as well as leaders of the country’s energy industry. It was also reported last month that Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), the Sarawak-owned electricity utility company, aims to generate 10,000 megawatts (MW) of energy by the end of 2030 and expand business beyond Borneo. SEB group chief operating officer James Ung Sing Kwong said the state has the resources to reach the target either through hydropower, biomass, gas combined cycle power or solar plants.

KUCHING (June 12): Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro) is fully prepared for the operation and maintenance of the Kuching Urban Transportation System’s (KUTS) future fleet of green hydrogen-powered vehicles, said CEO Mazli Mustaffa. He said this is part of the company’s commitment to transforming the city’s public transport system through the adoption of the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) and its feeder buses. Speaking at the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen (APGH) 2024 conference on Tuesday, Mazli explained that running the trial operations of Southeast Asia’s first hydrogen bus passenger service, which began in 2020, has enabled Sarawak Metro to gather invaluable experience and information on operating zero emissions vehicles for public transport. “As of today, we have accumulated nearly five years of unique experience in the operations and maintenance of these hydrogen-powered public transport vehicles,” he said when presenting a case study on the KUTS project. “With a range of 300km, and zero emission, our hydrogen buses are the perfect companion to our ART system.” He said Sarawak Metro will procure 55 more hydrogen buses to serve as feeder buses for “first and last mile connectivity” for commuters travelling on the ART. He added that the ART – the backbone of the KUTS project – will have a capacity of 250 passengers and run on virtual tracks on dedicated lanes. Apart from presenting the case study on the KUTS Project, Mazli was also a forum panellist for the topic of ‘Forging Ahead: Keeping up with the Green Hydrogen Developments in Sarawak’. The three-day APGH 2024 conference and exhibition brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the advancements and future of green hydrogen technology in the Asia Pacific region.

KUCHING (June 12): Sarawak is looking to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen in the region, said Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability said Sarawak is seen as an ideal candidate for large scale green hydrogen projects due to factors such as the availability of renewable energy sources, strategic location, local government support, access to raw materials and other encouraging factors. In his closing remarks for the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH 2024) here today, Dr Hazland said the speakers and panellists of the three-day conference delivered insightful presentations that highlight Sarawak’s unique advantages in the green hydrogen sector. “Among the key takeaways include; green hydrogen is a crucial component in the global transition towards a low-carbon energy system – we must continue to integrate renewable energy sources, drive technological advancements, and develop infrastructure to support the growth of green hydrogen production and utilisation. “Government support, international cooperation and research and development are essential in achieving this goal. We must also emphasise the economic and socioeconomic benefits of green hydrogen, as well as its potential to enhance energy security and mitigate climate change,” he said. Dr Hazland said the inaugural APGH 2024 set the stage for Sarawak to continue its green hydrogen journey not only to achieve objectives outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 but also to position the state as the hub and focal point for green energy initiatives in the region. Apart from hard-to-abate industries, Dr Hazland said Sarawak also made significant strides in other areas of green hydrogen application such as public transportation; proven with the Autonomous Rapid Transit, which is a mass transport system relying solely on green hydrogen. He pointed out the state government has also announced the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Clean Energy to further its ambitions to become a global leader in this sector. The conference brought together 611 delegates, 72 distinguished speakers and presenters, and 96 participating companies from 19 nations, as well as hosted 3,233 trade visitors. “I’m delighted to announce that we have achieved a total exhibition floor space of 2,400 square meters and a total value of memoranda of understanding (MoU) signed amounting to more than RM6 billion,” he added.

KUCHING (June 12): A group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from Sarawak has urged the federal government to recognise Gawai Dayak on June 1 in Sarawak and Kaamatan on May 30 in Sabah as national public holidays. They say such recognition fits the ‘Malaysia Madani’ concept and gives an impression of better treatment from the federal government towards Sabah and Sarawak. “We ask that, on the basis of equality, Gawai and Kaamatan for the indigenous peoples of Sarawak and Sabah be declared as national holidays.” The statement was signed by Persatuan Intelektual Pribumi Sarawak founder and advisor Wellie Henry Majang, deputy president Ricky Sani, and legal advisor Paul Raja; Persatuan Terabai Menua Sarawak founder Wilfred Nissem; and Sarawak Salako and Rara Community Association president Robert Umping. They stressed that there is a need to recognise the two celebrations because the key principle of the Malaysian Federation, as outlined in the Federal Constitution, was to celebrate the diversity of its various races, religions, cultures and regions. “Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem recently emphasised the unique and crucial role of Sarawak and Sabah in the federation, asserting that without these states, there would be no Malaysia. “Echoing Riot’s sentiment, we would like to highlight the importance of safeguarding the special rights of the indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak, as guaranteed by Article 153(1) of the Federal Constitution,” the NGOs said.

KUCHING (June 5): Sarawak has been recognised globally as a key player in hydrogen production, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. ”The whole world now knows Sarawak is producing hydrogen, this is because of the collective effort of all Sarawakians,” he said when officiating the Gawai Dayak celebration in Betong today. He said because of Sarawak’s development in hydrogen production and a key player in the region, he had been invited by various countries to give talks on green energy. ”All this is for the sake of combating global warming,” he added. He also highlighted Sarawak’s capability to become Asean’s economic hub with the taking over of Bintulu Port from the federal government as well as the proposed development of a new port, the proposed development of energy hub in Samalaju and Kidurong, and the proposed transborneo gas pipes spanning across Sarawak. “This is all in our plan, and I’m confident this would create high paying jobs for Sarawakians,” he said. Abang Johari also highlighted Sarawak’s effort in producing green fuel, including the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from algae for aircrafts. Hence, he said that is why Sarawak is also focusing on the development of Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) to train the state’s human capital to produce technologies to develop the state further. On that note, he approved the proposed setting up of Centexs in Betong, as well as proposed the setting up of international schools in Betong, Sri Aman and Sarikei. Abang Johari also announced the development of housing and a commercial area at the Betong junction. He said the housing project would be able to accommodate 1,000 units of houses which would be developed in phases. KUCHING (June 1): Sarawak has identified areas for Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), the UAE’s clean energy powerhouse, to invest in the state, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Premier said these areas have the potential to generate 1,000 megawatts (MW) of green energy through hydropower that may be developed in Murum. “Masdar is a large company from the UAE specialising in generating green energy through solar. “We have identified areas for them to invest in and this is a big investment, which means we have added value in terms of our green energy production,” he told reporters after attending the Gawai Dayak Open House at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today. Abang Johari said he has since met up with Masdar’s chief executive officer and that the state will set up an office in Abu Dhabi, which will be managed by Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). Abang Johari said Sarawak is fortunate to serve as a green energy hub especially when the state has green energy resources including hydrogen. “I feel that our long-term policy is on the right track with the global issue of climate change as well as food security because solar energy production today need not be only through floating solar but can be generated through elevated solar structure meaning they are on the ground. “Under this (elevated) solar, they can also develop for the food industry, and I saw that Masdar was very interested in this because they have already carried out this approach in Sharjah, one of the emirates in the UAE where they developed solar and underneath the structure was where they planted crops. As such, the energy is used for food production,” he said. Abang Johari said Sarawak’s green energy initiatives are part of a long-term policy, which will go beyond 2030. “We in the Sarawak government are doing this for the future so that it will benefit the younger generation. “That is also the reason why I came up with the free tertiary education policy on certain disciplines to that they can be educated and will have the qualifications and skills needed to continue our initiatives,” he said. Among those present at the open house hosted by Dayak leaders led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, as well asAbang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

KUCHING (June 1): For years, the ethnic ‘Kumang’ pageant has been an identifiable feature of the Gawai Dayak festival, being staged down from the grassroots up to state, and even national levels. As in any other pageants, there would be the Top 3 closely vying for the crown. However, it is interesting to note that upon the announcement of the results, they are not simply called ‘the winner, the first runner-up, and the second runner-up’. In the Iban pageant, the crown would go to the ‘Kumang’, while the next respective placings would be the ‘Lulong’ and the ‘Selinggar Matahari’ – all are characters mentioned in the community’s folklores. Although commonly stated to mean ‘princess’, the word ‘kumang’ is actually a proper name, referring to a princess-goddess always paired with her husband, ‘Keling’. Speaking of ‘Keling’, the male version of the pageant also accords special titles: the winner, of course’ is called ‘Keling’, while the respective runners-up are ‘Laja’, and ‘Sempurai’ or ‘Bungai Nuing’. Cultural beliefs Dato Sri Edmund Langgu Saga, a renowned authority on Iban culture and tradition, said the mythical Kumang and Keling were revered not only by the Iban, but also by several other ethnic groups in Sarawak. He added that even today, many Ibans still held the belief that Keling, in particular, could grant them strength, a courageous spirit and a ray of hope upon being invoked via certain rituals, or upon him appearing in their dreams. “The couple, Keling and Kumang, are said to be of the highest status, the most powerful, the most courageous, the most gracious and the most beautiful among the mythical beings in Iban folklores,” he told The Borneo Post here. “It is said, since time immemorial, that they are able to grant assistance to the mortals in whatever matters that they seek help for, whenever they ask for it. “Sometimes, though, Keling and Kumang would appear in someone’s dream, even when not being summoned for any wish,” he added. Langgu said both Keling and Kumang could grant help to any man, woman or child, but in many stories, the goddess seemed to have answered the wishes of the mortals more frequently than her husband, whose name would usually be invoked during times of wars when peace and order were sought. Langgu said the spirits of Keling and Kumang could be summoned through a ritual called ‘nampuk’ – which should ideally be carried out in solitude, free from interruptions. “The ‘nampuk’ is an Iban ritual usually performed inside caves, secluded areas, or even gravesites of the brave figures. “It is meant to request for blessings, good health, cures, strength, and special assistance from the Panggau Libau. “Those seeking help may be sent to any of these particularly secluded sites and spend a night there to perform the ‘nampuk’,” he said. ‘Warriors and goddesses’ Kumang, Lulong and Selinggar Matahari are close cousins. Lulong is the wife of Laja, who is Keling’s deputy overseeing all the administrative affairs in the ‘Panggau Libau’ – a mystical domain said to be ‘in between the mortal realm and the sky’. Selinggar Matahari is the wife of Sempurai – also known as ‘Bungai Nuing’ – who is Keling’s most trusted general and a brave warrior. “One thing about Sempurai is that apart from his superb strength, he is also known for having a hot temper,” said Langgu. “Apart from these six, there are others in Panggau Libau who are also able to help humans when sought for specific assistance,” he added. In a recent interview, Prof Noria Tugang concurred with the common notion of Kumang, Lulong and Selinggar Matahari being prominent figures in Iban folklores. “Kumang is often depicted as an exquisitely beautiful and virtuous woman, embodying the ideal feminine qualities. Lulong and Selinggar Matahari are her counterparts, also celebrated for their beauty and noble virtues,” said the professor of Arts, Culture and Heritage Management at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kota Samarahan. “Kumang is also renowned for her wisdom and superb skills, particularly in weaving. She is the very epitome of the ideal Iban woman. “Lulong and Selinggar Matahari, while having the same traits as Kumang’s, are usually depicted as being graceful and also highly skilled in various traditional arts and domestic tasks. “In Iban folklores, the three are often portrayed as close companions – very much like sisters. “They share a strong bond of friendship, and support one another in various endeavours.” According to Noria, in Iban society, these women are considered cultural icons and role models in that they represent ideal feminine qualities such as beauty, skills, wisdom and noble virtue. “Their stories are used to teach and reinforce cultural values and expectations,” said the academician. Adding on, Noria said while Kumang was traditionally regarded as being Keling’s wife, there were stories in Iban folklores recounting Lulong and Selinggar Matahari as being married to other heroes or warriors. “Also, the tales do not extensively detail their children, as the focus is more on their qualities and the moral lessons from their stories. “In some versions, though, they do have children who continue their legacy of beauty, wisdom and heroism.” Noria, within the same page as Langgu, agreed the Keling was indeed a central figure in Iban mythology, known for his strength, bravery and solid leadership – always with brothers-in-arms, Laja and Sempurai. “Keling is a paragon of masculinity, bravery and wisdom. Laja possesses similar traits and in some stories, he is even depicted as Keling’s brother. “Sempurai is another warrior figure, known for his loyalty and valour. “The three share many adventures and stand side by side in battles, supporting one another in their heroic quests and epic exploits. “Within the mythical framework of the Iban society, these men are seen as the ultimate heroes, serving as role models for bravery, leadership and other masculine virtues. “Their stories are central to the cultural and moral education of young Iban men,” said Noria. ‘Praise names’ According to Prof Bromeley Phillip, Kumang, Lulong and Selinggar Matahari have ‘praise names’: ‘Jawai Ensengai Dayang Kumang’, ‘Lemuk Bintang Gelung’ and ‘Peteri Rambu Benang’, respectively. “These are the common ones. They are beautiful maidens from Gelung Settlement (of Panggau Libau’,” said the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) linguistics professor. Kumang is, indeed, ‘the fairest of them all’. Her lovely physical attributes supersede those of Lulong, whose qualities, in turn, supersede those of Selinggar Matahari. The three, nonetheless, are the great weavers of Gelung, inasmuch as Gelung is called ‘Gelung Batu Benang’ – named after the thread-reels used to weave exquisite cloths such as the renowned ‘Pua Kumbu’ and ‘Kain Kebat’. “They are regarded as great women weavers but beyond that, they are also endowed with supernatural powers, putting them on the status of deities,” said Bromeley. Expressing points similar to those stated by Noria, Bromeley said in Iban folklores, the focus was usually on these main characters, with hardly any mention of their offspring. “There is a tale about a hero, Wat Lamba, who is Keling’s son from an affair with a maid, Indai Lelipai. “At first, Wat Lamba was known as Keling’s ugly clone ‘Engkeratung’. “However, over time, Wat Lamba grew up to become just as handsome and dashing as Keling, and just as strong, too.” Bromeley also talked in more details about ‘the great three warriors of Panggau Libau’. “Keling is skilled in warfare. Laja keeps the elixir that can lengthen one’s lifespan, while Sempurai is the blacksmith hailed as being the first to fit the handles into stone axes. Bromeley said just Like Kumang, Lulong and Selinggar Matahari, the qualities of Keling, Laja and Sempurai were in descending order. “Keling holds the superlative attributes, followed by Laja, and then Sempurai. “It is also said that they are first cousins. These three are hailed as the great warriors of Panggau Libau, having led many battles and never lost any of them,” said the academician, also an expert in the Iban language and the digital form of its alphabet.

KUCHING (May 31): The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has always been fully committed to advancing rural development, said Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The Deputy Premier said GPS has never neglected rural development and from day one under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership, the government has recognised the development gap between rural and urban areas. He pointed out Abang Johari has allocated substantial funds to implement transformative rural projects and programmes. “As a matter of fact, the GPS government has made it a policy and priority to narrow the development gap between urban and rural areas. “Our focus has been, and will continue to be, on improving infrastructure, access to healthcare, providing education and income generating opportunities, expanding internet and digital services to rural communities, and much more,” Uggah said in his Gawai Dayak message today. The Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development and Second Minister for Finance and New Economy said this commitment is clearly reflected in the Sarawak Budget for 2023 and 2024. Under the 2023 Sarawak Budget, 60 per cent or RM4.54 billion of development expenditure was allocated for rural development, and this increased to 63 per cent or RM5.695 billion under this year’s budget. For the 12th Malaysia Plan, RM44.28 billion has been approved for rural infrastructure, focusing on roads and bridges, with an additional RM1.64 billion allocated for rural transformation programmes. Additionally, about a year ago, Abang Johari established nine regional development agencies, each allocated with an unprecedented budget of RM1.5 billion to carry out their respective tasks. These agencies are the Northern Regional Development Agency (NRDA), Highland Development Agency (HDA), Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda), Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), Sri Aman Development Agency (Sada), Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (Irsda), Greater Kuching Co-ordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), Mid Rajang Development Agency (Mirda), and Rajang Delta Development Agency (Radda). “Their objectives essentially revolve around bringing in much-needed rural infrastructure and socioeconomic programmes, with a focus on expediting their implementation,” Uggah pointed out. He said these initiatives are the most tangible and concrete proof of the GPS government’s focus and passion for rural development, aiming to ensure that rural areas attain development status by 2030. This aligns perfectly with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims for Sarawak to achieve economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability by 2030, he said. “Therefore, it is most appropriate for the Dayak community to express our deep appreciation for the rural-biased development policy of the GPS. The unity of our people has been the driving force behind the political stability, progress, and economic development that we enjoy today. “Let us, during this festive season, celebrate the existing unity, harmony, and cooperation among us all, in sync with our slogan ‘Segulai Sejalai’. Finally, may this Gawai Dayak celebration fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with good health and prosperity,” he said. Uggah also shared his and his family’s heartfelt Gawai wishes to all Dayaks, wherever they may be. “May this special day continue to bring us everlasting peace, health, and happiness. Selamat Hari Gawai 2024, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai, Lantang Senang Nguan Menoa,” he added.

KUCHING (May 31): When Sarawak embarked on its green journey, the project that generated the most chatter – and continues to do so – is the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) tram. The bold project had plenty of naysayers when it was first announced, but it did not take long before many begin to believe that this is the way forward for a cleaner, more efficient public transportation system and not just in Sarawak but in other parts of Malaysia. Sarawak Metro, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is tasked with implementing the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project and ART, which are the backbone of the public transport system here. Sarawak Metro chief executive officer (CEO) Mazli Mustaffa said the hydrogen-powered vehicles are perfectly safe for use with proper handling and safety measures as the ART trams adhere to strict international safety standards. “These vehicles are equipped with an advanced safety system, including sensors and shut-off valves, to detect and respond to potential issues. Leak detection systems minimise the risk of leaks and at the same time, emergency response protocols are in place to address any safety concerns,” he told The Borneo Post in conjunction with the upcoming Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen (APGH) 2024 Conference here. Mazli said a proof of concept (POC) exercise for ART was conducted from September to December last year on the capability and performance of the hydrogen propulsion system, hydrogen refuelling process and autonomous guidance system, as well as technical data collection and identifying any preliminary problems and challenges. “As of April, construction is nearly completed on the three-kilometre stretch of dedicated ART lane in Kota Samarahan, which was used for the POC exercise last year.” Other ongoing works are the finalisation of the ART system design, commencement of construction works on the Rembus ART depot in Kota Samarahan, as well as its stations near the Sarawak Heart Centre and Simpang Tiga. The CEO further said both ART trams and its feeder buses are zero-emission vehicles and the bus service will operate within a three-kilometre radius from each ART station and thus, offering first-and last-mile connectivity for commuters. “The introduction of hydrogen-powered vehicles for the KUTS project is part of the Sarawak Government’s initiative to decarbonise public transportation, which is in line with initiatives environmental sustainability agenda,” said Mazli. He pointed out the many benefits of incorporating hydrogen fuel cell technology in public transport system was zero-emissions from vehicles, energy efficiency, a quieter operation, rapid refuelling and longer range compared with electric vehicles. On the three hydrogen buses already operating in the city, Mazli said the buses are currently running on two routes: the Downtown Heritage Loop, and the Damai Loop. “The Downtown Heritage Loop is well patronised by passengers commuting to various places in the city including to the Sarawak General Hospital and it runs several trips daily from Monday to Friday, while the Damai Loop, which operates on Saturday and Sunday, is popular with both locals and tourists travelling to Damai.” Mazli added that the trial operation of the buses begun in 2020 to gather information on vehicle maintenance and hydrogen consumption patterns, and the hydrogen bus service is free of charge to the public. He also pointed out Sarawak Metro has catered to requests by organisations from the public and private sector as well non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for passenger transfers during special occasions via the hydrogen buses. BELAGA (May 29): Cultural celebrations such as the ‘Lamei Do Ledoh’ actually empower the Kayan community, says Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon. “The Kayan tribe, as part of the Orang Ulu ethnic group, is a minority whose number is very small compared to other races in Sarawak, and Malaysia in general,” he said in his speech for the ‘Lamei Do Ledoh’ for Sungai Asap sub-district level in Uma Bawang, Sungai Asap here recently. “Thus, it is important for us (the community) to be united, in one heart and in one accord, so that our voices, demands and goals can be heard by the higher authorities,” he said in a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Chukpai said through unity, all Orang Ulu communities could achieve great potential in various fields. “Traditional arts and culture reflect our identity and uniqueness, and through the hosting of this festival, we hope that this cultural heritage could be preserved for the future generations,” he said. Visitors to the ‘Lamei Do Ledoh’ were treated to the traditional dance performances, folks’ games, a spread of authentic food, and a handicrafts exhibition, leading to the event’s highlights: the ethnic beauty pageants, ‘Keligit’ (women) and ‘Belawan’ (men). Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Sarawak Datuk Liwan Lagang, who performed the event’s closing ceremony, highlighted the festival’s role in keeping the Kayan culture and traditions alive, as well as in promoting them to the outside world. The Belaga assemblyman said it was very pleasant to see each group from the Kayan longhouses along Sungai Asap perform the traditional dances such as ‘ngajat’ (men) and ‘datun julud’ (women) during the festival. “Such cultural showcase serves to promote cultural awareness as the whole world can watch their performances via social media,” he said. The ‘Lamei Do Ledoh’ is usually celebrated in April, and originally, it meant as a celebration to give thanks to the Kayan goddess for a good harvest. The festival has since been integrated as part of the Orang Ulu’s Gawai celebration, together with the hosting of the ‘Keligit Do Ledoh’ and ‘Belawan Do Ledoh’ ethnic pageants. This year’s Keligit Do Ledoh crown went to Tening Mujah from Uma Bawang, who was also named ‘Miss Photogenic’. Aryinnie Azira, also from Uma Bawang, was the first runner-up and the ‘Miss Talent’ title winner, while the second runner-up was Jeslyviana Livan Aging from Uma Juman. This year’s Belawan Do Ledoh was Harry Batok Emut, who was also the crowd’s favourite; thus earning him the ‘Mr Favourite’ title. The respective runners-up were Dalvin Palong of Uma Daro and Malpin Ating of Uma Juman.

KUCHING (May 29): There was a time when kerosene or gas lamps using kerosene were the ‘close companions’ of ‘perahu tambang’ (water taxis) around Kuching Waterfront, especially when transporting passengers at night. However, today, most of Sarawak’s iconic water taxis, which have existed for centuries, are now equipped with solar panels on their roofs. This helps generate power to illuminate various decorative lights installed on the boats. This innovation, blending traditional and modern elements, has led many operators to instal colourful LED strip lights on their boat roofs. Some have also installed lights inside the boats for passenger comfort, powered by solar panels ranging from 0.3 to 1.2 metres in size. This transformation adds vibrant colours to the scenery along Kuching Waterfront and the Sarawak River, against the backdrop of the State Legislative Assembly Building and the Darul Hana Bridge. For Awie Nawi, 56, who has been operating a water taxi for the past 20 years, the installation of solar lights has been incredibly convenient as he no longer needs to buy kerosene or charge dry cell batteries as he did before to power the lights. “The state government provided all this, so there’s no more hassle. With this solar system, it charges during the day and can be used later. No more days of charging like with the old dry cell batteries,” he said, adding that he only charges a fare of RM1 for a one-way trip from Kuching Waterfront to the bank across. Awie also demonstrated the remote control used to turn the lights on and off, explaining that the solar power system also makes it easier for him to charge devices such as mobile phones on the boat. Meanwhile, Saini Bujang, 65, said that although he was initially hesitant about the installation of the solar panels, he has since realised the many benefits, including cost savings of nearly 90 per cent compared to before. “Kerosene used to be expensive and sometimes it was hard to get supplies. Now, it’s easy to use free solar energy to power the lights and electrical equipment,” he said. He added that using solar-powered lights is also more energy-efficient and not affected by rainy weather, unlike kerosene lamps which can be extinguished if they come into contact with water. A tourist, Norhayati Tahir, 33, from Sibu, Sarawak, said the colourful lights installed on the boats look very beautiful at night, which encouraged her to take a ride along the Sarawak River or cross to Kampung Boyan. Local media reported in December that 22 ferry operators in Kuching participated in the Facelift ‘Perahu Tambang’ project to refurbish their boats and ensure better safety for their passengers. The project, funded by the Sarawak government, aims to give the water taxis a fresh appearance and attract tourists by incorporating ethnic motifs from Sarawak and installing solar-powered lights. – Bernama
