KUCHING (July 6): It was a proud moment for Ensemble Melayu Nusantara of Sarawak Malay Cultural Foundation Charitable Trust (AKYBMS) to showcase their heritage at this year’s World Rainforest Music Festival (RWMF).
The ensemble wowed the audience with a repertoire of traditional Malay songs, bringing the rich cultural heritage of the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago) to life on stage.
The line-up included Fauziah Gambus, the most popular ‘gambus’ (traditional lute, said to evolve from the Arabian stringed instrument called ‘oud’) female performer in Malaysia, also widely known in Indonesia via her appearances on Indosiar TV.
Adding further depth to the show was Fera Ikmal, known for her showmanship and popularity as a radio jingle singer.
Adding to the wonderful medley were Borneo Collective and Indonesia’s Selonding Bali Aga.
Ensemble Melayu Nusantara, under the leadership of Dr Kamil Salem, delivered a seamless and captivating set that kept the audience enthralled from start to finish.
The ensemble included Butong Olala, Indonesia’s top accordion player; Abdillah Firlany, a versatile musician and composer on local television, as well as Johari Morshidi, Ainal Bustari Johari, Mohammad Dadi, Sahminan Sirat, Arisman Parman and Sukarno Ishak – each bringing their unique skills to the stage.
It could be seen that the impact of Ensemble Melayu Nusantara’s show at the RWMF was really deep, to the extent that as the group made their way back to the hotel, they were surrounded by fans eager to meet these musical icons.
“Their performance not only showcased their exceptional talents, but also highlighted the global appeal and unifying power of traditional Malay music.
“The ensemble’s powerful and outstanding delivery at the RWMF was a true testament to their artistry and dedication to promoting Nusantara music.
“With outstanding vocal performances, impressive musical arrangements and an engaging stage presence, they presented a show that was both memorable and inspiring.
“The festival-goers left with a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and vibrant energy that the Ensemble Melayu Nusantara had brought to every performance,” said Kamil.
